Match Report 28th May 2023 Opens Rangers vs Jets
GS Abbey, GA Georgia WA Chelsea, C Kate, WD Morgan, GD Bek, GK Ellie. Bench: Kat, Grace, Heidi, Ash
After the first Rangers’ goal by Abbey, Jets fired up to take an early break. They couldn’t sustain it, however, and a defensive tip got Rangers quickly back in it. While they couldn’t convert immediately, Ellie took the next rebound and Kate drove down court to deliver to Georgia to even the score. Good whole court defence created pressure on the Jets’ attack and although our shooters struggled initially, letting Jets take a 2 goal lead, Rangers rallied quickly through a couple of centre court tips to disrupt the Jets’ flow. Even when Jets pulled a couple of goals back, Rangers still controlled the play. Bek’s intercept of a Jets’ centre created an important gain and with the shooters now settled, Rangers ran out the first 15:10 ahead.
The same 7 took the court in the second. A held ball didn’t give Rangers the ideal start but patient play down court and a defensive gain by Ellie, soon saw Rangers stepping on the gas to draw the lead out to 8. A sideline intercept by Kate helped blow the lead out further, The bench were up and about giving the team plenty of support. It went goal for goal for a while until Ellie grabbed the ball and sent it down to the Rangers’ end for an 11 goal margin. A Jets’ centre break gave Rangers another opportunity and though they took a while to convert it, when Georgia sank it and Abbey followed it with a great take from a long pass, Rangers were up by 13 with 4 minutes to go in the 2nd. Georgia slotted another 3 in a row and Ellie had a day out pulling down another rebound, to take Rangers to a 35:18 half time score.
Kate faced her 3rd opposition centre as Rangers came out unchanged and kept the pressure on Jets by taking a circle edge intercept. Ellie joined the party with a neat grab and Rangers’ lead built. Speedy passing into Abbey from Chelsea carved a path through the Jets defence. Bek continued to run hard, getting useful tips and supporting Ellie in the circle. Rangers started to make changes with Heidi and kat on at WD and GA. The defensive end became a fortress and Jets struggled to get clean ball. Ash came on at GD and keen to join in, tipped her first ball. Dani was brought in at WA. Kat worked tirelessly to combine well with Abbey and Kate stayed strong in centre, hitting the deck after a circle-edge intercept. Rangers powered ahead and won the third by the biggest margin 57:24.
More player changes in the fourth, saw Morgan on at Centre and Grace on at GD. Morgan fought to win the ball back after a stray centre pass and Grace made her mark by taking an early intercept. Delivery into the circle faltered for Rangers and Jets briefly capitalised. Kate came back on at Centre and Rangers steadied with Kat shooting beautifully for a 37 goal margin. Kate joined the others on the bench as Morgan came back on. Grace picked up a few loose balls to keep the flow towards our attack end and, while the transition down court got a bit messy at times, the shooters kept the scoreboard ticking over. Heidi drove strongly down court to provide movement out of defence and delivered a beautiful long pass into the circle to finish the game with an impressive 41 point lead 74:33.
